Over the past two weeks, Mr Deamer, Head of Drama, alongside a team of wonderfully dedicated staff, had the pleasure of taking the entire Year 8 cohort to experience the spectacular West End production of The Lion King. The trip provided an unforgettable opportunity for students to immerse themselves in world-class live theatre and created memories that will stay with them for years to come.
Spending the afternoon in London offered far more than just a theatre visit; it allowed students to broaden their horizons, experience the vibrancy of the capital city, and develop valuable cultural capital beyond the classroom. From the moment the iconic opening number began, students were captivated by the breathtaking staging, innovative puppetry, stunning costumes, and powerful performances that make The Lion King such a successful and world-class production.
The experience will also have a lasting impact on students’ learning within Drama curriculum. Seeing professional performers and creatives at work has deepened students’ understanding of technical theatre, design, storytelling, and performance skills, bringing their classroom learning vividly to life.
Over the next term, students will build on this experience by analysing and evaluating different aspects of live theatre, which are key skills required within KS4 GCSE Drama examinations. Having witnessed a professional West End production firsthand, students now have an authentic reference point to support their written analysis and critical evaluation. This early exposure will deepen their understanding of performance, design and theatrical intention, giving them a strong foundation as they progress towards GCSE study in the next couple of years and supporting future success in their examinations.
The trip was a wonderful celebration of creativity, curiosity, and shared experience. Our students represented the school brilliantly throughout, demonstrating enthusiasm, respect, and genuine appreciation for the arts. A huge thank you goes to all staff who supported the visit and made this enriching opportunity possible. An inspiring experience that will continue to influence and motivate our young performers long into the future.
